We understand that it is the
intention of the Government to put the Southern {(of
Mississippi)} railroad from here to Jackson in running order at
once and also the road from Jackson to Canton {New
Orleans, Jackson & Great Northern RR}. Many think this will
induce the Yankees to come out from Vicksburg and destroy every thing,
but we are satisfied that our forces now in the area are in supply and
sufficient to keep all the Yankees stationed at Vicksburg within their
intrenchments. We say let Big Black be made the line of our defense;
let our officers be vigilant, and there will be no danger of raids
until the immense amount of provisions on the line of the Central
railroad can be gathered up and transported to a place of safety. |
