Locomotive Explosion |
On Friday morning when the
freight train reached Love's station -- eighteen miles from Memphis --
on the Mississippi & Tennessee railroad, the locomotive, "the
D. S. White," was switched off to get water from the tank. No
sooner was water admitted into the interior of the boiler than it
exploded with an immense report, bursting into fragments, which were
hurled to a great distance. William Dougherty, the engineer, and F. M.
Downs, the fireman, were instantly killed. The occurrence was a most
fearful one; the mangled bodies presented a horrible sight. Esquire
Malory held an inquest over the bodies, when a verdict in accordance
with the above facts was rendered. |
