Railroad Accident |
A serious accident occurred on
the Southern {(of Mississippi)} rail road
yesterday about eleven miles west of the city
{Jackson}. A heavy train loaded with troops was going westward
when, in consequence of the track spreading, the engine and tender were
thrown off. A number of cars were crashed over the engine, and of the
occupants 45 are known to have been killed and forty more wounded. The
engineer, conductor and fireman were supposed to have been buried
beneath the ruins and neither of them has been seen up to the time our
informant left. Some of the many of the sufferers were p??d. The track
was already damaged, but Superintendent Williams informs us it will be
repaired this morning. No blame is attached to any one. |
