Railroad Accident |
The down freight train on the
Va. & Tenn. Railroad met with a serious accident at Big Spring
Thursday. Just as the train was crossing the bridge a little this side
of the Depot, a wheel of one of the cars was broken, by which three
cars were precipitated into the river, and the bridge very much broken
up. The cars were loaded with salt, which of course was greatly
damaged, and they knocked to pieces. Two negroes went down with the
falling mass, but came out from beneath the debris of broken cars,
tumbling timbers and tons of salt, but little hurt. Their escape is
almost miraculous. The trains will have to change passengers and
freight at the river until the bridge can be repaired, which will be
done in a day or two. |
