ReCapture of the Opelousas Railway {New
Orleans, Opelousas & Great Western RR} |

Berwicks Bay, May 26th |
Capt. Fuller and 30 men
proceeded down Atchafalaya Bay today, on a small gunboat and passed
Brashear City. They then went up Bayou Bloueff to the Railroad bridge.
From thence they took hand cars and run back to Brashear City. Here
they took possession of locomotive and cars, and took Lieutenant Cox
of the Federal army prisoner. |
They then had the locomotive
fired up and with the train went up the road to meet the down train.
This they met at the regular point of passing, and took possession of
it, taking the Lieutenant and two private soldiers in charge,
prisoners. They then went down within nine miles of Algiers and took
up the railroad track, and cut the levee at Bell's or near
there. |
After this they proceeded back
to Brashear, burning all the bridges, and taking with them all the
cars. |
The running stock taken
consisted of three locomotives, three passenger cars, 80 box cars, 32
flat cars, and 28 stock cars. |
The party then took their boat
with the prisoners and went up the bayou to New Iberia. |
