Caterpillars are a small
beast, but capable, in large numbers, of accomplishing wonders. A
locomotive, with a train of cars, when under full headway, looks like
a thing of life and power not easily overcome. We have heard of
caterpillars eating up a cotton crop, but the idea of stopping a train
of cars was somewhat novel. The thing was accomplished, however, on
Tuesday, with the down train of the {Houston Tap
&} Brazoria road. For a mile the road was completely
covered with caterpillars. The wheels of the locomotive crushing them,
slipped on the track as smoothly as though it had been greased; and
with the utmost efforts of all hands, the locomotive was an hour in
overcoming these insignificant enemies to its progress. |
