We learn that railroad
progress on most of the roads is satisfactory. The S. A. & M. G.
Road {San Antonio & Mexican Gulf RR},
now running within three miles of Victoria, is doing a good business,
both in passengers and freights. The B. B. B. & C. Road {Buffalo
Bayou, Brazos & Colorado RR} is also doing well, though we
regret to learn that the bridge at Richmond is for the moment
impassible. The importance to this company of completing their road
across Cummings' Creek, at an early day, is manifest, thereby securing
all the trade of Fayette county. We also hope soon to hear of the
completion of the Columbus Branch {Houston Tap
& Brazoria RR}. We give the managers fair warning that if
they do'nt go ahead the Columbus, Bellville and Hempstead enterprise
will tap the very vitals of their work. Work progresses finely on the
Texas & New Orleans Road; and the day is rapidly approaching when
this new line of travel will be open, and the time hence to New
Orleans shortened by near twenty-four hours. The Navasota Bridge on
the {Houston & Texas} Central is now
completed, and the iron on the road to Millican's is being laid.
Railroad progress is, on the whole, much better than could have been
expected with the short crops last year, and does not appear to have
been seriously affected by the political movements of the times. |
