Direct Railroad Line |
Messrs. Editors, |
There is a proposition out, to build a
railroad from the terminus of the Fayetteville and Coalfields railroad
{the Western RR} through Chatham county, some where near the Ore Hill Foundry, thence
up north of Deep River, from five to eight miles from the River,
crossing Pole Cat some where near the county line between Guilford and
Randolph counties, and running on the dividing ridge between the
waters of Deep River and Pole Cat, direct to Greensborough, on the
North Carolina railroad. This line would be calculated to encourage
home industry as much as any road that could be built, as it would
give those great quantities of mineral of various kinds, and outlet to
market, and facilitate the manufacturing interest on the strong arm of
poser called "Deep River," where there are now several
flouring mills and cotton factories in operation. In a few years, all
those vacant mill seats would be occupied by some kind of machine
shop. Deep River is not equaled by many rivers, for facilities for the
manufacturer, from the Coalfields to Jamestown. |
