Danville Connection |
The Legislature of 1858-9, having granted
a charter for a Railroad from Danville to the Coalfields on the Dan
River, in Rockingham {the Western RR} and the Legislature of 1860-'61 having granted a
charter from Greensborough to Leaksville -- the so long talked of
Danville Connection has, in effect, been chartered. It now remains for
the people of Guilford and Rockingham to bestir themselves and to
build the road. The distance from Greensboro' to Leaksville is about
thirty-three miles. Shall the road be built? That it can be, no one
doubts, but will it be done? It remains for the people of Guilford and
Rockingham to say. In this connection, we call attention to the
charter granted, extending the Coalfields Road west from Deep River.
It rests with the Stockholders to say where this road shall intersect
with the North Carolina Railroad. Should the Greensboro' and
Leaksville Road be built, it would have a great influence in
controlling the Western terminus of the Coalfields Road. It is time
that the people of Guilford and Rockingham were moving in this matter.
Whether we remain in the Union, or are to go out, it is highly
important that the Danville Connection should be completed, and that
as speedily as possible. We hope soon, to hear of meetings being
called, and of stock taken by the thousands. |
