The Greensborough and Danville Railroad Connection |
The Richmond Dispatch urges the speedy
building of this road in view of the following facts: |
The disaster in Eastern Kentucky and the
apprehension it has excited for the safety of our connection with the
Southwest through the Virginia & Tennessee and the East Tennessee
& Virginia Railroads -- and the possible interruption of our
intercourse with the South via the Wilmington & Weldon Railroad,
by the Burnside Expedition, directs attention to the vital importance
of completing the connection between the Richmond & Danville and
the North Carolina Central Railroads. This connection, only some 35 or
40 miles long, might be made in a few weeks. We have the rails, we
imagine, or may get enough from the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad to
add to those we have, to finish the line. It would be a surety against
an interruption of a communication with the South and southwest, which
at this time is of vital importance. We trust that Congress will
promptly address itself to the consideration of the matter, and that
it may adopt such measures as will effect this work as speedily as
possible. |
