Destructive Fire |
The Manchester depot, of the {Richmond
&} Danville Railroad Company, was destroyed by fire on
Monday morning, between three and four o'clock, involving a loss in
buildings, cars, etc., of about $50,000. The origin of the fire is
unknown. It is said that a fire had been built on the floor of one of
the cars of the previous night's down train, by some soldiers, who had
guarded against accidents all the way through, by keeping the fire on
a piece of sheet iron. When the train arrived, they left the fire, and
the train, after being emptied, was backed into the depot, where,
during the night, took fire from the debris left by the soldiers, with
the above results. |
{The Richmond papers give the
date of the fire as November 11} |
