The Railroad Question |
Messrs. Editors |
Had I known that Mr. T. H.
McMahan was the Vice President of the Harrisburg Railroad {Buffalo
Bayou, Brazos & Colorado RR}, I should
certainly have written the article signed C., in more courteous phrase
and with more respectful language; for there is no man living for whom
I have a higher respect than for him. When he sees the signature
below, I am sure he will not imagine that I could have included him
among the officials, upon whom I animadverted so severely. |
I wrote strongly, because I
felt strongly; and I felt strongly, because from my official position
as Chief Justice of this county, I have greater opportunities perhaps,
than any other, of witnessing the unemployed working classes in our
community. I wrote too, under another misapprehension; I had been
informed that more than nine-tenths of the stock of that Road was
owned at the North, and that only enough stock was distributed in this
State, to qualify a Board of Directors under the requirements of the
law. |
With this explanation, I
adhere to what I have written, and subscribe myself, |
Your ob't serv't |
