The Piedmont Railroad |
The Richmond & Danville Rail Road Company
has taken the whole of the stock in this Road. It is to be built
immediately, on the most direct practicable route from Danville to
Greensboro. |
We understand that the Confederate
Government declined taking stock in the Road as authorized by Congress.
It was proposed however to lend $1,000,000 to the company that woul
undertake the construction of the road, and we presume the offer has
been accepted by the company that has taken the matter in hand. |
Here will be a fine opportunity for those
whose lands are in the hands of the enemy, or too much exposed to render
their cultivation safe, to find employment for their negroes, in a
locality that may be considered as safe from the ravages of the invader
as any within the limits of the Confederacy. |
