New Market, N. C., March 30, 1861 |
In pursuance of previous notice, a Rail
Road meeting was this day held at this place, and on motion Jesse Walker
was called to the chair, and Joseph Newlin requested to act as
Secretary. |
The chairman briefly explained the object
of the meeting -- when Joseph Newlin offered and moved the adoption of
the following preamble and resolutions: |
Whereas By an act passed by the late
General Assembly of North Carolina, to amend the charter of the
Fayetteville & Western Railroad Company, placing as we believe, the
building of this road within the reach of the sections of country which
are interested in its accomplishment, and understanding that at a recent
meeting of the Company, the amendment of said charter was accepted, and
ordered a survey at the earliest day possible; Therefore, |
Resolved, That this meeting approves of
the building of this road as speedily as possible, and will do all
within our power to aid the work to completion, and that we approve of a
subscription to a reasonable amount, and on suitable condition by the
county of Randolph, to aid in the construction of said road. |
Resolved, That we invite a survey of a
route from the Coal Fields to some point near Buffalo Ford on Deep
River, thence up said River via Columbia, Island Ford, Franklinsville,
and Cedar Falls Cotton Mills, to some point near Diffie's Ford or the
mouth of Hasket's creek, there crossing said River, thence the best
route to the ridge dividing the waters of Cape Fear and Pee Dee Rivers,
say to some point five or six miles above Asheboro', thence on or near
said Ridge via New Market and Bush Hill to some point on the North
Carolina Road. |
Resolved, That the Chairman appoint a
Committee of three, to render any assistance and give such information,
as they may be able from time to time to do, to those who may be engaged
in making the survey. |
Which being read was unanimously adopted,
and the Chair appointed A. U. Tomlinson, Joseph Newlin and Thos. K.
Hanner, a Committee in accordance with the last resolution. And on
motion of Joseph Newlin, the Chairman was added to the Committee. |
