President Davis's Cabinet |
***** |
We think the President would have done wisely to extend
his railroad recommendation to the building of a road from
Greensborough to the Deep River Coalfields, for which a charter
exists {Western RR to North Carolina RR},
but money is wanted to carry its object into effect. Such a road
would bring the coal and iron of that rich region within ten or
twelve hours of Richmond, and would connect the extensive and most
important Arsenal and Armory at this place with the Capital, in two
or three hours more of time. The distance is about 50 miles from
Greensborough to the terminus of our Western road. And the
whole distance from this place to Richmond, by that route, about 270
miles, against about 370 via the river to Wilmington and railroad to
Richmond. We hope that some member of Congress will propose such an
extension of the President's recommendation. |
The Richmond Examiner says of the proposed Danville
connection {Piedmont RR} "no time
should be lost in carrying the suggestion into execution. With
proper energy the arrival of the spring would be the completion of
the absent link of the road." |
