Chatham Coalfields Road |
We learn from the Standard that an
ordinance is before the Convention to connect the coal and iron mines
of Chatham with the railroads of the State, by an exchange between the
Company and the State of the bonds of solvent corporations for
treasury notes, to be used in making the improvement. The Standard
says iron is needed and must be produced. It thinks the Ordinance will
pass and the road {the Chatham RR} be speedily constructed. A letter from a member of
the Convention, of the 24th, informs us that Mr. Strange of New
Hanover had that morning moved its indefinite postponement, which
produced an interesting and rather long debate. |
The ordinance for the Danville Connection {the
Piedmont RR} was postponed
till Thursday next. The Richmond Dispatch expresses great anxiety for
the speedy completion of this connection, in view of the possible
success of the yankees in getting possession of the only other through
routes, the Virginia & Tennessee and the Wilmington & Weldon.
|
P. S. We learn from the Spirit of the Age that the
Coalfields road bill has passed its 2d reading. Of course the motion
of Mr. Strange must have been rejected.
