The Texas & New Orleans Road |
The Texas & New Orleans
road is now complete from Houston to Beaumont with the exception of
the last six miles from Houston, and about five miles between Greens
bayou and the San Jacinto. It is presumed that the whole road will be
complete in 20 days. The Eastern Texas road from Beaumont to Sabine
Pass will also be put in operation in from 30 to 40 days. |
Arrangements have been made
for running a line of steamers from Sabine Pass to Berwicks Bay four
or six times a week. Owing to the fact that both bars will have to be
crossed by day light, the time table will have to fix so as to admit
of passengers embarking on the steamers at both places at about sin
down, the steamers arriving at their destination at daylight next
morning. |
With this arrangement trains
for the present will leave here probably at 1 P. M., arriving at
Sabine Pass at 6 P. M., and passengers reaching New Orleans at, say 10
A. M. next day. From New Orleans the arrangements will require an
afternoon train, say at 2 P. M., passengers arriving at Sabine Pass at
6 A. M. next morning, and in Houston at 11 A. M. The saving over
present time from New Orleans to Houston will be nine hours and from
Houston to new Orleans about twenty hours. This saving will turn the
??le of travel altogether over this route. |
