Southern Pacific Railroad |
"Malakoff," the
Paris correspondent of the New York Times, says: "Mr. Stevenson,
of Nashville, Tenn. the able President of the Pacific Railroad, is now
here obtaining money for the road. He has been very successful."
As the only business Mr. S. had in Paris was to procure the
ratification of the French contract for the construction of the road
westward from Marshall, through Texas, and to the Pacific Ocean, there
can be no doubt that he has accomplished that desirable object. Indeed
there have been no doubt entertained as to his success, for the Paris
capitalists were eager to enter upon the contract. We are happy to
state, in addition to this, that Mr. Stevenson, on the second day
after his arrival in London, negotiated with Mr. Chas. Peabody, for
five thousand tons of iron, giving the bonds of the company at par in
payment. We trust these favorable indications, will have their
influence upon the action of Congress next week, when the Pacific
Railroad bill becomes the special order of business. |
