There are no Yankees now on Belle Isle {in
Richmond} -- all sent South, where they can be better fed than
there during winter. The Libby is also clear, all of its inmates
(excepting some one hundred and fifty naval prisoners) having been
sent South. The Belle Isle prisoners numbered nearly seven thousand,
being all non commissioned officers and privates. The Libby prisoners
numbered six hundred and odd commissioned officers of all grades. |
{This movement would have
required some 165 box cars -- about 13 trains of 12 cars each.} |
