The Mobile Register exposes
one of the disastrous results of military interference with the regular
course of trade. It says: "The 'beauties' of the order prohibiting
shipment of meat and breadstuffs to Mobile by the Mobile road
{Mobile & Ohio RR} have resulted shamefully
and disgracefully. The amount of provisions awaiting shipment, but which
were withheld by an infamous order, that were destroyed or consumed by
the Federals, would have lasted Mobile a twelve month, yet these
supplies were invitingly placed at the disposal of the Yankees." Sherman
destroyed them, and the people suffer. Who is to blame most -- the
authority by which the order was issued, or the foe who destroyed the
supplies? |
