Particulars of the Railroad Accident Last
Night |
We have been enabled to gather
the following particulars of the smash-up on the Opelika Branch Road
{of the Montgomery & West Point RR} last
evening, referred to in our morning's edition: It seems that the tender
broke down, by which three box cars next to it were smashed up and
thrown from the track. Persons on the train acquit all officers of the
road of blame. The train was running at very moderate speed, and the
accident was entirely unavoidable. The following are the casualties: |
Killed -- Samuel
Carter, Co. B, 54th Ga.; C. C. Conway, Co. I, 54th Ga.; J. A. Page, Co.
B, 29th Ga.; one negro man, attached to the 54th Ga. |
Wounded -- W. H.
Robinson, Co. K, 54th Ga., badly burned. Joseph Dean, Co. B, 54th Ga.,
thigh broken; Wm. B. Carter, Co. B, 54th Ga.; leg bruised; Wiley Carter,
Co. B, 54th Ga., arm injured; Lt. Hughey, Co. B, 54th Ga., injured in
the breast; J. A. Chambers, Co. G, 29th Ga., thigh fractured; Sergt. J.
R. Powell, Co. G, 29th Ga., dislocation of shoulder; George Douglas,
29th Georgia, badly injured in chest; Sergt B F Hall, 45th Tennessee,
bruised badly; G H McConnica, 45th Tennessee, contusion; G W Douglass,
29th Georgia, contusion. Several others were slightly, but not severe
enough to be sent to hospitals. The killed and wounded were brought in
last night and sent to the Walker Hospital. |
