| The presentation of the handsome goblet,
alluded to in The Mercury of yesterday morning, took place yesterday
even at six o'clock, at the South Carolina work shops. Not only were all
the engineers and firemen in attendance, but a large numbers of the
friends of Col. Meredith witnessed the ceremony. The goblet bears the
following inscription: "Presented to J. W. Meredith by the engineers and
firemen of the South Carolina Railroad, as a just appreciation of his
humane conduct towards E. Albers, who came to his death by falling from
the engine, on the 12th June, 1861." |
| This testimonial was quite unexpected by
Dol. Meredith, and evinces the kindly feelings which actuate the
engineers and firemen employed on this road, and their appreciation of
the humanity displayed on this occasion. Col. Meredith was well repaid
for his generous action by the consciousness of having done his duty to
a fellow man, and needed not the demonstration of yesterday evening to
remind him of what a true man should do; but we doubt not he will long
remember it as an evidence of the high estimation in which he is held by
those with whom he is daily associated. ***** |
