Intelligence has been received here of an
attempt, on Wednesday night, to destroy the Bridge over Whippoorwill
Creek on the Memphis Branch Railroad {Louisville
& Nashville RR}, between this place and Russellville. It is
stated that the guard at the bridge was attacked by a force of 250
Lincolnites or Union cavalry, and that two of the guard were killed,
and the rest dispersed. The bridge was then fired, but as it is built
of iron, with the exception of the main chord, no material damage was
done. Reports concerning the affair are so numerous and contradictory,
that we are utterly at a loss about the truth of the matter, and can
only infer that the bridge was in some way injured. Chief Engineer
Fleece {of the Memphis, Clarksville &
Louisville RR} was on the ground yesterday, and reports, as we
are informed, that trains will be crossing again today. |
