From the Clarksville, Tenn. Jeffersonian |

It is reported here, upon what we
understand to be good authority, that at last accounts, the 14th
Regiment Tennessee Volunteers were under orders for a land march of
180 miles, upon a line almost parallel with railroads, and only a
short distance from them. This seems to us to be a most unnecessary
and cruel exposure of our gallant boys, which every sensible and
humane man must unreservedly condemn. They have already endured
hardships for six months past, unknown to any other portion of our
army, in their campaign in Western Virginia, and now to put them upon
a 180 mile march, at this inclement season of the year, over such a
country as they will have to traverse, when they could more quickly
and easily be transported by railroad, is unmitigated and inexcusable
brutality. |
