Quite a dangerous accident occurred to the
Louisville train {Memphis, Clarksville &
Louisville RR}, near the State line, as it was going out last
Saturday {January 19}. It seems that the
"switch," where the accident occurred, had been properly
{adjusted?} but not "locked" and when the
wheels of the locomotive ran upon it, the rails parted, and it ran off
the track. Fortunately there were freight cars between the tender and
passenger cars, and their concussion with the locomotive and tender
detached the passenger cars, and they were left on the track. But for
this the injury to passengers might have been very serious. The
locomotive was a good deal injured, and the fireman was so badly hurt
that it was thought, for a while, he would die; but we are glad to hear
that he is recovering. A passenger too, in the baggage car had his hand
badly hurt, but no others were injured. |
