| I reached this place last
Monday, after many delays and accidents both by land and water -- most
of them misconnections of the trains. I met with one of those
delightful episodes in steamboat traveling; the sinking of a steamer
-- the Clipper -- on the Tombigby. The railroads in this
section are worn out, and traveling over them is slow, disagreeable
and dangerous. I congratulate myself as being exceedingly fortunate in
reaching here after two weeks travel, without loss of life or limb. |
