Repulse of the Enemy at Griswaldville and

Destruction of Railroad Cars |
Macon, August 1 |
|
The raiders have made no
demonstration on this place since Saturday, and have been driven from
the line of the Central Railroad. They are now between Clinton and
Monticello where our cavalry are operating against them. |
They apparently made Clinton a
centre from which they sent out raiding parties to operate on Macon,
Griswaldville, Gordon and the line of railroad. |
At this place and
Griswaldville they were attacked and repulsed. At the latter place
they succeeded in burning twenty-seven cars. |
At Gordon they burnt thirty
cars, and the freight depot. They also burnt the Oconee bridge. The
track and telegraph line are only partially destroyed. |
