Etowah Company |
We had a call yesterday from
Mr. S. H. Tobey, Secretary and Treasury of the Etowah Manufacturing
and Mining Company. We regret to learn from him that the Company lost
most all of its extensive and splendid machinery which fell into the
invader's hands. Only a small portion of the works could be gotten
away so unexpected was the advance of the enemy. The loss was a
serious one, not only to the government but to the State and the
people. They not only furnished unlimited quantities of war material
to the Confederate government, but manufactured large quantities of
useful articles for the people. We hope, however, that the Company is
not wholly lost to use but that it will collect the debris of
misfortune, give it shape, and once more get underway in another
location. |
Macon Confederate |
{I am uncertain
whether this the Etowah Foundry or a different company.} |
