The Augusta & Hamburg R. R.
{Columbia & Augusta RR} |
Active steps should be
immediately taken by the Government to construct this road. In the
event of the destruction of the Carolina road, the completion of the
Hamburg and Columbia road would be a matter of vital importance to the
Government and people. The Columbia Guardian make the following
remarks: |
Although we are now in
mid-winter, the present campaign is not yet ended. The fate of
Savannah is not yet determined. This fall may carry momentous
consequences to our lines of communication, and to the security of our
interior country. Consequences may follow which will seriously
interfere with the transportation of supplies from the Southwest to
the army of General Lee. In view of possible events in this State, and
of the effort the enemy will probably make to seize the strategic
point of Branchville, the rapid completion of the Columbia &
Hamburg railroad appears to be a military necessity. It is a road
which should have been built long ago, and for other reasons than
those which now induce us to urge its construction. Its advantages
were apparent to the dullest comprehension. Even since the
commencement of the war, it might have been finished, and put into
successful operation by the refugees from our coast. Their negroes
could have been profitably employed, both for themselves and the
country. |
We trust that all necessary
steps will be promptly taken by the Legislature and the Company to
ensure the building of this important link, without any further
unnecessary delay. A great deal depends upon it. The circumstances of
the country will enable it to see and appreciate this fact, more
clearly now than ever before. |
