Raid on the Mississippi Central Railroad |
The raid that struck this road
consisted of 1200 or 1500 men, including a negro regiment, and four
pieces of artillery. They struck the road on Sunday about 2 P. M., at
Vaughn's Station, just where it crosses the Big Black, burnt one
section of the bridge, and then went up the road, burning tanks and
station houses, and all the trestles, but only tearing up a half mile
of the track, as far as Goodman's. There was a slight skirmish at the
bridge, in which a Mr. Nichols was killed, and at Goodman's a man
killed two of them from his window, but he was killed for it. There
also was captured a section master, whom they released, and five
negroes whom they kept. They have returned to Yazoo City. Genl. West
says the road will be in operation in two weeks. |
