Dear Sir, |
A matter has just come under my attention I think you
should be made aware of. In May, when at Goldsboro, Mr Hudson met me
at the Hotel there & stated he had been Master Machinist on your
road, but, as you had lost your shops at New Berne & could not get
the Shops at Raleigh, he wished to come to me. I told him I could
not employ him as long as he was employed by you. If he was out of
your employment & his character as a Mechanic suited me, as I wanted
one, I would employ him. He referred me to several persons and from
what I heard of him thought he would suit me. Afterwards, he came to
me in Raleigh and as understood he had left your work. I engaged
him. He asked me to allow him to repair two of your engines then at
Raleigh. I said certainly, but as soon as you can get there, I wish
you to head to my shops. Up to the 15th Oct, he appeared to be
acting for me. But I heard of his not adhering to his duty and
getting drunk very often. I wrote to him on the subject. He then
informed me he could get another employment & would resign with me.
I had him Detailed & when he resigned, returned, of course his name
to the Conscript officer, who, it appears, arrested him. He then
stated, He never had been employed by me, but had been, & is now, in
your Employment, altho, he sent me a Bill for $???, the Salary due
him from June to 15 Oct. I presume he has been drawing salary from
your road & mine, and, in addition acting Falsely to both. |
Of course, I have no opinion to offer, respecting such
conduct, & the Morals that d??ted if but think. I would be derelict
of duty & courtesy to you, if I did not inform you of it. |
With great Respect |
I am Sir |
