General, |
Perhaps you are already aware
that the Government is now sending south from Richmond a large number of
troops, about eighteen thousand. It will require several days to
transport them over our Rail Road, and we desire to do it as
expeditiously as safety will allow. Therefore we have concluded to
divide them & send one half over Wilmington & Weldon Road & the other
half over Raleigh & Gaston Road. My object in giving you this
information is to let you know of the importance of their rapid
transportation south & to ask you to aid Mr. Dunn, who has kindly
consented to superintend for me the loading of trains at Weldon. He is a
gentleman of large Rail Road experience & you can rely upon his judgment
in connection with this matter. You will also, if you please, prevent
the injury to our Rail Road cars. Of course I do not expect you to act
in this matter if it conflicts with your other duties. I would go down
myself, but I can for the present be of more service here. |
Very Respectfully |
Your Obt Sevt. |
