The distress in Genl. Lee's army for corn is beyond all
comparison. The feed is reduced to five pounds of corn per day for
each horse and even this will have to be curtailed if there is not
some remedy. I want you to stretch every nerve in your direction in
sending corn to Richmond. I am going south Thursday through
Tennessee to see what can be done by that route and I hope our
united efforts may bring some relief. |

Would it not be an advantage to discontinue double daily
trains & put the accommodation train at hauling freight. Also to
make freight train schedules with close connections running night
and day. |
