Sir, |
The construction of naval vessels in N. Carolina, and
particularly those on the Neuse and the Roanoke, has been greatly
retarded by the difficulty of getting the iron armor for them over the
R. Roads. Commander Wood, who has just returned from N. Carolina,
informs me that if called upon by this Department, you would give it
important aid in this respect. I take the liberty therefore of
requesting whatever assistance you may be able to afford in the
transportation of iron from the rolling mill of Atlanta to Kinston and
Halifax. Flag Officer Lynch at Wilmington can give you all necessary
information upon the subject, and will appraise you of the difficulties
in the way. |
I know of no more important service than getting this iron
to its destination that I would feel at liberty to call upon you for. |
