My dear Sir, |
Your note of the 31st ult is
recd in which you say that I was mistaken in asserting that you had told
me of having a conversation with Gen Benning on the evening of the mob
in Raleigh, in which he should have said that he had heard threats made
to tear down the Standard office. I accept your recall as true, as your
recollection is perhaps better than mine, having less on your mind at
the time than I had. |
I am perfectly confident
however that such a statement was made to me by someone. You were the
author of it as alluded to in my letter to the President the next day
after the occurrence: in very private conversations on the subject I
always mentioned yr name as the author, and never doubted it for a
moment until the reception of your note. Even now I can not fix upon any
other possible person who could have told me. * Still Colonel, I repeat,
that I accept yr denial. Take if for granted that I am naited(?). |
very respectfully |
Yr obt svt |

* but a?? the many rumors and great
excitement prevailing it was easy for me to be mistaken or misled as to
the person. |
