Hon John P. King  {President, Atlanta & West Point and Georgia RRs}

Dear Sir
   In answer to yours of 31st Janry, I have to state that a lot of R. Road iron belonging to Mr. Isaac Scott {President, Macon & Western RR} of Macon was seized by the State on the 16th day of April last by order of Major Genl H. R. Jackson commanding the State troops to be used on the floating battery or ladies Gun boat. I think about 490 tons. After due inquiry as to the market price I paid Mr. Scott $100.00 per ton for it. The iron was at that time rapidly rising in the state and holders generally refused to sell at the then market price. Pig iron is now worth as I am informed over two hundred dollars per ton in this state and new Rail Road bar could command from $250 to $300 per ton.
   I do not think new Rail Road bar could have been purchased by contract in this state at $100.00 per ton at any time during the month of April 1862.
I am very truly
Joseph E. Brown  {Governor, State of Georgia, head of Western & Atlantic RR}
