| Gen'l, |
| On the first of March 1864 I was ordered
by Genl J E Johnston in pursuance of orders from the Secretary of War
to report to Col R L Owen Mil Supt Va & Tenn RRd. |
| I did so on March 8th 1864 and was ordered
by him to take charge of this Rail Road as Gen'l Supt. |
| Within the last three months I have
received letters from yourself which I answered promptly through Col
Owen. He is now confined to his bed and I deem it my duty to write
you. |
| Herewith I tender my resignation as Major
Quarter Master in the Provisional Army of the Confederate States to
take effect March 1st 1865. |
| I do this with great reluctance having
been connected with the Army since the Commencement of the war but my
duty to my family compels me to adopt this course. |
| I am very respectfully |
