| In reply to your letter of the
28th ult. I have the honor to state, that Mr. Mason Morfit on the 24th
ult. was appointed Transportation Agent at Weldon, for the purpose of
forwarding troops and supplies of the Confederate States to this and
other points in Virginia. He was also directed to grant transportation
tickets to all persons traveling under orders in the public service.
It was hoped that this arrangement would serve the public convenience.
No railroad in the State has yet been taken exclusively for public
purposes. As regards the profits accruing to the Railroad Company,
that might be arranged by withholding the payment for transportation to
such as belong to hostile States. |
