| Your communication of the 6th
inst has been duly received. I am instructed by Maj Genl. Lee to say
in reply that his circular of the 2d was intended to apply when the
Enemy were operating in the Field. The Portsmo. & Weldon Road {the
Seaboard & Roanoke RR} being deemed safe while we held Norfolk, the Genl does not deem it
necessary to organize a military guard for the Road at the present
time. |
