| Hon Sec War |

| Your excellency will please grant me
permission to bring by Railway 500 sacks of salt
{about three car loads} from Abingdon
Va. to Staunton {Virginia & Tennessee & Orange
& Alexandria and Virginia Central RRs}. I understand the cars
are all in Government service & at your disposal. You will confer a
great favor upon the Citizens of this portion of the Confederacy, by
assenting to this demand, as we are in actual want of alt, ( some
families having scarcely enough for Table use) & the supply cannot
be obtained nearer than the Salt Works. Hoping to be favored with
your consent to this request, I am Sir |
| Very Respectfully Yours |

| Inform Mr Hendsen that the cars are only in Govt
service when the transportation of troops and supplies are
necessary, that the Dept has no other control over the RR. *** |
