Hon. L. P. Walker |
Secretary of War |
|
Sir, |
Your letter of the 29th instant to the
Secretary of the Navy has been referred to this Bureau. |
The Commandant of the Navy Yard Norfolk
has been instructed to forward to New Orleans 125 32pdrs of 61
cwt, but I regret to say that we cannot provide carriages and
equipments for them in consequence of the great pressure of work at
the Norfolk Yard in preparing Ordnance equipments and stores for the
various defences of Virginia, South Carolina and Georgia and in
supplying articles required for the use of the Army forces under the
command of Genl. Huger besides large demands for gun carriages for
Naval purposes. |
I have the honor to be |
Very respectfully your obt sevt |
D N Ingraham |
Chief of the Bureau |
{This letter is included to
show just one item of war that had to make the long trip from
Virginia to New Orleans in 1861. Since each gun weighed about 7,000
pounds, a flat car could only carry 2 guns, so the requirement is
for at least 63 cars for this one purpose.} |
