I am appealed to as President of the
Petersburg Rail Road Company by holders of cotton & tobacco,
especially manufactured tobacco to run it out of town for them to
avoid its destruction here by the Provost Marshall. They propose to
remove it a distance of twenty (20) or thirty miles from town the
whole force of the company is engrossed & has been for several
weeks in the transportation of Government stores sent South from
Richmond. May I stop the transportation of government stores in
whole or in part for a few days to accomplish the parties referred
to. They are very urgent. Please reply immedly |
