Mr. E. H. Gill |
Sup't. {Superintendent, Richmond & Petersburg RR} |
|
Dear Sir, |
At your request I proceed to give a statement of facts
concerning Five (5) Boxes containing each one Barrel of Apple Brandy
received from Petersburg by this Road. |
On or about the 16th of January we received Two (2) cars of
Government freight Transportation bearing date 10th of January, one of
the cars contained ammunition and the other ordnance stores, in the same
car with the last names was found Five (5) Boxes containing the Liquor
belonging to the Messenger in charge of the Government Freight, whose
name was McCoy, who I am informed by Mr B. F. Corr a clerk in this Dept.
exhibited an order from the Quarter Master at Greensboro N. C. to the
Rail Road Companys to furnish Transportation for these Boxes "as
ordnance stores" he paying freight on same. |
I am under the impression that it passed over the other
Roads as "ordnance stores" without being detected, the Boxes and neatly
put up, well nailed, so much so that we ??? seriously suspect they
contained liquor, as they had more of the appearance of dry goods than
anything else, when the part called for the Boxes I declined delivering
knowing it was in violation of orders of Provost Marshal. |
Very Respy |

The Second time he McCoy came, he was accompanied by
Lieutenant Lewis Zimmerman, the same day we delivered it to Mr. William
Brant perhaps one or Both of these Gentlemen might be able to give you
some information. |
