Major C. S. Carrington, |

Dear Sir, |
Your
communication of yesterday asking information relative to the five
barrels of Apple Brandy (private freight) transportation over our road
as "Ordnance Stores," has been duly received, and in reply I enclose you
a statement of the facts from our freight agent Mr Woodcock from which
it appears that the five barrels belonged to Mr. McCoy the messenger in
charge of "Ordnance Stores," and by referring to the transportation
order it appears that it was given by "Capt. A. G. Brenizer A. Q. M.
Greensboro N. C. |
On discovering by the leakage of one of the boxes that they
contained Brandy, I reported the facts to "Genl J. H. Winder, (a copy of
my note to him is herein enclosed), and after waiting about ten days for
him to take action in the matter, and receiving no orders from him, I
sent for Mr. McCoy, told him that I had complied with the requirements
of the orders of Government in reporting the transaction and as I had
received no instructions in relation to it, he was at liberty to pay the
charges for transportation and take away the Brandy, which he did. |
Respectfully Yours |
