To President Davis |

My command was delayed at Danville five
hours. I have been nine hours coming forty five miles. I report this
Piedmont Road to you because it has been so often reported before
for the good of the country. It should be taken out of the hands of
the present directors, every man is evidence of wanton neglect and a
want of patriotism. |

Brig Genl. |

Secretary of War |
This is but cumulative evidence against
the efficiency of this Road. Have the case thoroughly examined into.
The Qr. Mr. Genl. may have knowledge of this and other extraordinary
and injurious failures. Please report the result. |

To Qr Mr General |
Note the President's endorsement. enquire and report |
