I learn that very little progress was made in destroying the R. R.
{San Antonio & Mexican Gulf RR}
yesterday, owing to an idea prevalent that the order to that effect
would be countermanded. I desire to say to the Genl. that I have said to
the parties interested that there was no hope of his changing the order
& that what I undertook to do I would do as intended. I sent all the
force at my command yesterday with proper tools, under Capt. Cunningham,
by Col. Darden's order; and am not responsible for needless delay. |

His purpose for me to say that it will probably take the present negro
force two weeks to break up the road, working faithfully, and at least a
month as they are now proceeding, as I am advised. |
