Dear Sir, |
There was rec'd at this post today &
reshipped to your address (from Richmond) 47 Boxes Army Clothing. |
Upon examination, one of the Boxes was
found to have been opened & robbed of 55 Pairs of Pants. The Box
was marked to contain 90 pair. On counting what remained in the Box,
we ascertained the number to be 35 pairs, showing 55 pairs to have
been stolen. The car (belonging to the R. & Danville R. R.) had a
board broken from one end sufficiently large to admit the entrance of
a man. The remainder of the Boxes appeared to be in good order. |
No one appeared to be in charge of the
goods, or, rather no one made their appearance, as being in charge. I
mention this fact because it has been usual to send some one in charge
of large lots of Q. Mr's Stores. |
For proper security such boxes as these
should in all cases be strapped with hoop iron. |
Very truly yours |
T. W. Howard |
