Dr Sir, |
The practice of the government officials
is now to bring almost everything here after 4 o'clock in fact the
majority of the government freight is received here after five oclock.
this practice keeps my hands and men here until 9 & 11 oclock at
night. It is wrong to expect men to work all day and part of the night
and to be here at the usual hour next morning. a change must be made,
either refusing freight at the unreasonable and unusual hours or an
additional force must be employed. From the character of the freight
generally it would be as well for it to come in the morning as late at
night, as it is frequently the case that no transportation is
furnished until next, and my rule is to way bill nothing until
transportation orders come in for the freight. |
I submit this for your consideration at
the same time I wish to be understood that I am willing to work day or
night if necessary but I am unwilling to do unnecessary work for the
government or any one else. I see no more reason why I should receive
government freight that I cannot ship for want of transportation
orders, than I should receive individual freight when I know no
freight would be paid on it. I have never and never will shirink from
anything necessary it matters not when that is but the plan of
receiving government freight without authority to send it off is in my
opinion wrong -- still if you say so I will continue it but I must
employ additional force to attend to it. |
Yours very Respy |
