I would suggest that troops leaving Petersburg to go
via Raleigh, go to Gaston instead of coming here. The Wilmington {&
Weldon} Road can carry half that is to come and the Raleigh {&
Gaston} Road the other half, and thus prevent an accumulation
of troops here. Moreover, the trains returning from Gaston &
this place both can carry back corn & other supplies &
prevent a scarcity of rations at Richmond. The arrangement would
certainly expedite the transportation of troops & prove equally
to the interests of the Rail Road Companies & the Govt.
