Sir, |
I have the honor to report that your
order of 18th did not reach me till the 27th inst. and has received
my immediate attention. I have gone over the country sufficiently to
ascertain certainly, that most of the Louisianan planters, who
stopped in this part of the country, have returned home, and the
few, who stayed, have already placed their negroes in the public
service, to work on rail roads. These are consequently none to hire
in this vicinity. |
